Paid advertising can be one of the fastest ways to win new customers. It can also be one of the fastest ways to waste money. The difference usually comes down to preparation, not budget.
Before you launch a campaign on Google, Meta or LinkedIn, work through these five questions.
1. What exactly do you want people to do?
“More awareness” is hard to measure. “More enquiries through our contact form” is not. Pick one clear action for each campaign: a call, a form, a booking or a purchase. Everything else follows from that choice.
2. Who is your ideal customer?
Write a short description of the person most likely to buy from you. Where do they live? What problem are they trying to solve? What would make them choose you over a competitor? The clearer this picture, the better your targeting and your ads will be.
3. Where will people land?
Sending ad traffic to your home page is a common mistake. Each campaign should point to a page that matches the ad, explains the offer clearly and makes the next step obvious. A focused landing page is often the single biggest improvement you can make.
4. How will you measure success?
Set up conversion tracking before you spend, not after. Decide which numbers matter (for example, cost per enquiry) and make sure you can see them. Remember that, under UK law, non-essential tracking needs your visitors’ consent, so plan your cookie banner and analytics setup together.
5. What can you afford to test?
Your first weeks of advertising are about learning what works. Set a test budget you are comfortable with, give it enough time to gather useful data, and only scale up once you can see results.
The bottom line
Good advertising starts with clear goals, a well-defined audience and honest measurement. Get those right and your budget has a far better chance of paying for itself.
